The DNA Test
In an attempt to find out the true identity of my grandmother, Kitty Smith – also known under the assumed name of Elsie Maud Tutton, which she ‘borrowed’ from Henry Smith's and Elsie Maud Tutton’s marriage certificate – I took an Ancestry DNA test. Later on, my father Frank Henry Smith, and his sister Jeanette Anne Barnes, formerly Smith, did the same. The results were as follows (Updated as at 16/10/2025):
I also uploaded mine and Frank's DNA test results to Gedmatch and My Heritage both of which gave slightly different ethnicity results!
The ethnicity estimates are updated from time to time so the above results may not be the same today!
Predicted Relationship:
Susan & Frank: Parent & Child, Shared DNA 3451 cM across 65 Segment
Frank & Jean: Brother and Sister, shared DNA 2631 cM across 61 Segments
Jeanette & Susan: Close family/first cousin, shared DNA 1615 cM across 56 Segments
The DNA Test shows a very strong link to Irish and/or Scottish roots, particularly for Frank who has 83% Irish and Scottish heritage, and for Jeanette, who has 88% Irish and Scottish heritage. It appears that Kitty was telling the truth about her parents ethnicity!
I uploaded the DNA results for my father and myself to Ancestry.Com and linked them to my family tree (the Jowett Smith Family Tree). I got numerous DNA matches with other people, as did my father Frank, but narrowed these down by only looking at our shared matches. I was anxious to get some good results but, with DNA matching, you have to be patient!
I sat back and waited - not expecting the amazing result that was about to be revealed...
DNA Matches on Ancestry With The Skivington and Thomson Families
There were four shared DNA matches on Ancestry.Com that interested me. On each of the trees linked to the DNA matches there was either a Skivington and/or a Thomson in their family. The four DNA Matches with Skivington and/or Thomson are shown in the following charts, along with an explanation for the linked relationships. Ancestry. Com provides a potential relationship chart showing how families are connected, as shown below.
There is a clear pattern suggesting a DNA link with the Thomson and Skivington families. At last - I have somewhere to start my search...
